A Universe of Stories at Your Library!

Buzz Aldrin's Moon Walk Apollo 11Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, A Universe of Stories, was selected as the 2019 Summer Reading Program theme.  The Mad Science program Destination:  Moon Walk will start us out on Thursday, June 6th.  We follow this with Kate Thomas who brings animals from her family’s homesteading adventure ranch on June 13th and end on June 20th with a Chisholm Trail Heritage Center program on an early Oklahoma daredevil. Pearl Carter Scott became the youngest pilot in the United States on September 12, 1929, when she took her first solo flight at the age of 13.

RESET for Financial Fitness @ Your Library!!!

piggy bank financial fitnessRESET! Last week our first session in the Financial Fitness @ Your Library had to be canceled. We are restarting the series this Thursday 4:00 – 5:00 pm.It is a free six week series to help local citizens better manage their money and plan their financial future. Dates for the classes are now March 21, 28, April 4, 11,25th and May 2nd. The registered participants will meet each week during the series to explore budgeting, borrowing, saving, and investing. Participants should plan to attend all six classes. Refreshments will be provided. REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Contact: gleasonmemorial@att.net, or call 580-662-2925 (leave message). Open to the public.

Librarian, Renee Yocum, likens the weekly programs to building blocks. We start with how our attitudes toward money shape how we spend it and then move on to budgeting, understanding credit and borrowing strategies to pay down debt and then how to save and invest for the future.

2019 Death by Chocolate a Success

2019 Death by Chocolate crowd 2Much appreciation to everyone who came out to support the library despite the freezing, drizzly weather .  Between our DBC lunch, our tablet raffle and other donations we raised $2613 which will provide our $400 match to the Pilcrow Children’s Book Project grant as well as providing funding for our summer reading program and other projects.   Thank you to so many people who donated such wonderful chocolate desserts.  We could not do this with their support.  I really want to thank board member Frances Ann Jackson and assistant Librarian Des Allen plus her husband and son Leland, and Cabot for putting the tables and chairs out this year and everyone who voluntarily stayed to take everything down and work cleanup.  Our library board members, Pam Bell, Donna Butler, Mary Grace, Frances Ann Jackson and Lisha Scifres not only made desserts but also put together the croissant sandwiches, and made time for taking care of the prep work that has to be done to put an event together..  Pam manned the ice cream sundae table again while Donna took care of the chocolate fountain.  Mary, Frances Ann, and Lisha made sure that the tables stayed supplied with sandwiches, chips, and most importantly desserts.  I hope I haven’t left anyone out but here is our list of donors this year – Des Allen, Malane Grace, Cindy Hildebrant, Donna Hildebrant, Betty Howard, Brenda Longest, Mariah Martin, Anna Kay McGowan, Kay Moore,  Pat Sullivan and Geree Thompson.

There were 48 winners from grades 1-6 in the PTO Book Report Fair Poster Contest.  Each winner was invited to Death by Chocolate to see their posters on display with their lunch paid for by the PTO.

This year we will raffle off two Kindle Fire tablets.  Tickets are $1.00 per ticket or $5.00 for 6.  Tickets may be purchased at the library during regular business hours or from any of the library board members – Pam Bell, Donna Butler, Mary Grace, Frances Ann Jackson, and Lisha Scifres.  One tablet is a Kindle Fire 7, the other a Kindle Fire 7 Kid’s Edition.  Don’t forget the Kindle Fire tablets can be used to download ebooks, audio books, and download or stream video from many sources including the Oklahoma Virtual Library!  Remember the emedia grant we received last year; we really want our patrons to be able to take advantage of this resource.  Call us for your library card number and password!
